How’s your week going?

Let me ask you something: When you pray or think about your future, how big do you actually let yourself dream?

Be honest.

Most of us have learned to dream “realistically.” We’ve adjusted our expectations based on past disappointments, current circumstances, or what seems possible.

We call it being practical. Being responsible. Not getting our hopes up.

But what if that’s actually limiting God?

A few months ago, I was in a coaching class where we were practicing using our imagination as a tool. One of the assignments was to imagine ourselves with Jesus.

So I closed my eyes and started imagining.

I pictured this pavilion on a beach with some picnic tables and restrooms. The water and beach weren’t even that pretty. It was like one of those rest areas off the highway that you’d be a little leery of stopping at.

Jesus was sitting on top of one of the picnic tables, and as I walked up to Him, He turned, looked straight at me, and said…

“You’re limiting Me.”

That hit me hard.

Out of all the beautiful places I could have pictured, this is what came to mind? I’ve been to Switzerland, and this is what my imagination defaulted to?

It showed me something: I still had limiting beliefs. I wasn’t really using my imagination like I should. I wasn’t dreaming as big as I thought I was.

And then Ephesians 3:20 kept coming back to me, where it says God is able to do “exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.”

Think about that for a second.

“More than we ask or think.”

Or as it says in another version “more than all we ask or imagine.”

If it’s more than what we can imagine, then maybe we should actually start imagining something…and imagining big.

Because if you default to small thinking, God’s “exceedingly abundantly above” is still limited by where you started.

So what would you dare to imagine if you knew God wanted to do more than what you’re thinking is possible?

Not what seems realistic. Not what you think you can accomplish on your own.

What would you imagine if you truly believed Ephesians 3:20?

Take some time this week to sit with God and let Him help you dream. Write down what comes to mind, even if it feels uncomfortable or too big.

Maybe it’s a specific income number.

Maybe it’s seeing yourself doing the work you’ve always wanted to do.

Maybe it’s a restored relationship. A healthy body. A thriving ministry. A business idea that’s been shrunk down to fit what looks possible (pointing at myself🫢).

Whatever it is, write it down. Get specific. Let yourself imagine it fully.

And if you want to take it further, consider creating a vision board. My wife and I do one every year. It helps us stay focused on the dreams and goals we’re believing God for throughout the year. More on that another time.

Don’t let limiting beliefs shrink your dreams (or your prayers).

God wants to do more. But He needs something to add the “more” to.

Praying and believing with you for an upgrade to your imagination this year!
