I want to ask you something that might feel a little uncomfortable: When’s the last time you actually asked God for what you really want?
Not a quick “bless me” prayer.
Not a vague “Your will be done.”
I mean specifically asking Him for the desires of your heart. The things you’ve been thinking about, dreaming about, hoping for.
If you’re like many believers, it’s been a while…or maybe never.
Here’s why that matters.
James 4:2 clearly says: “You do not have because you do not ask.”
Read that again.
You don’t have it because you haven’t asked for it.
I didn’t say it…it’s in the Bible 😉
A while back, I was sitting in my quiet time and Ephesians 3:20 kept running through my mind, the verse about God doing “exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.”
And I realized something: I don’t usually ask for much when I’m praying.
I talk with God. I listen. I thank Him. I worship. But actually asking for specific things? I rarely do that.
So I thought, “well if it’s more than what I could ask, and I haven’t asked…then maybe I should ask.”
Even though it felt uncomfortable, I sat there and started asking. Really asking.
I asked for wisdom, revelation, direction, and clarity. I asked for our business and ministry to prosper. I asked for a house, cars, and specific financial goals.
I asked for things on my vision board that I’m believing for.
I asked for a lot.
It felt awkward at first. But here’s what I realized: God’s the one who literally told me to do this…to ask.
So here’s my challenge for you this week:
Sit down with God and ask Him for what’s actually on your heart.
Not what you think sounds humble. Not what seems reasonable.
And when I say ask, that’s not begging or pleading…trying to get Him to do it.
The Bible says “if you ask anything in my name it will be done.”
So we don’t need to beg…as sons and daughters we come confidently and boldly, knowing He wants to bless us.
What do you really want?
Write it down. Ask for it.
Maybe it’s a provision or health goal. Maybe it’s direction for a decision you’ve been stuck on. Maybe it’s breakthrough in a relationship or clarity on your next step.
Whatever it is, ask.
And take note of this…be detailed and specific.
Then take it one step further: Ask God what your part is.
What’s the next step you need to take? What action is He asking you to take in partnership with Him?
Because “faith without works is dead.”
Asking is step one. Acting is step two.
Don’t let another week, month, year go by wondering why you don’t have the desires of your heart.
God’s not holding out on you. He’s waiting for you to ask.
Praying and believing with you for bold faith to ask God for what you want this year…and to ask BIG!
David
