Motivation is Overrated—Here’s What to Do Instead!

Ever told yourself, “I’ll start when I feel motivated”?

Maybe you have a dream, a goal, a calling on your life; but when it comes time to take action, you feel drained, unmotivated, and stuck in a cycle of waiting for the right moment, the perfect plan, or some magical burst of inspiration.

This mindset can keep you stuck for years.

I get it. I’ve been there more times than I’d like to admit.

But here’s what I’ve learned: waiting for motivation is a waste of time. It’s inconsistent. It comes and goes. And if you rely on it, you’ll waste valuable time that God has given you to step into your purpose.

So what do you do instead? Here are three powerful ways to move forward, even when you don’t feel like it.

1️⃣ Shift Your Focus From You to Your Purpose

A lot of times, we get stuck because we’re focused on ourselves, how we feel, whether we’re in the right mood, or if we have enough energy.

But when we shift our focus to why God has called us to do something, everything changes. It gives us something stronger to stand on.

Ask yourself:

  • Why did God call me to this in the first place?
  • Who will be positively impacted if I keep going?
  • What happens if I don’t do this?

I had to remind myself of this before I filmed my most recent video. It’s not about how I feel—it’s about the purpose behind it. There’s someone out there who needs this message. Someone who’s praying for the very thing God has put in me to share.

And the same is true for you.

God didn’t put that dream or assignment on your heart for no reason. There’s someone waiting for what God has placed inside of you. Your voice, your gift, your calling—it’s not just for you. It’s for the people God has called you to reach.

And they don’t need you to be motivated. They just need you to show up.

2️⃣ Just Do Something, Even If It’s Small

One of the biggest reasons we stay stuck is because we’re waiting…waiting for some big burst of inspiration to get us going.

But many times, motivation follows action, not the other way around.

If you want to build momentum, you have to start moving. Even if it’s small.

  • Need to work out? Just put on your shoes.
  • Need to write? Open the document and type one sentence.
  • Need to start that project? Set a five-minute timer and work on it.

Think of it like a parked car. You can’t steer it until it’s moving. The same goes for your calling. God can guide you, direct you, and open doors—but you have to start moving first.

Even if it feels small. Even if it feels slow. Because once you’re in motion, it’s a lot easier to keep going.

That’s exactly why the enemy wants to paralyze you with overwhelm. He’ll make your assignment seem so massive that you don’t even know where to start.

But you don’t have to do it all at once. Just take the next step in front of you.

And once you do, you might be surprised at how quickly motivation kicks in.

3️⃣ Pray and Speak Life Over Yourself

If you know me, you know how much I believe in the power of words. Our words don’t just communicate; they create. What we say (or even what we dwell on in our minds) shapes our reality.

If we’re not careful, we can talk ourselves out of taking action before we even start.

I caught myself doing this recently:

  • I don’t feel like it.
  • I don’t have the energy.
  • I don’t have the perfect idea, title, or thumbnail.

Even when I wasn’t saying these things out loud, I was thinking them. And those thoughts were keeping me stuck.

But when I realized what was happening, I made a shift. Instead of reinforcing my excuses, I started declaring God’s truth over myself:

  • I am called and I am equipped.
  • By God’s grace, I can do this.
  • I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
  • I have the mind of Christ, so I have clarity, divine ideas, and revelation that will make a positive impact in people’s lives.

Aligning my words with what God says about me and speaking these things out loud changed everything. It pulled me out of the slump and gave me the push I needed to move forward.

So if you’re feeling stuck, take a moment and check your words.

Are you reinforcing the problem, or are you declaring the truth? Because what you speak over yourself matters more than you realize. 🔥
